It's a Big World for Little Seals
The Aialik Glacier sits in the Kenai Fjords National Park outside of Seward Alaska. A town on the Gulf of Alaska that is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Steep cliffs, water that is a thousand feet deep, everywhere you look you see whales, seals, coastal birds, sea lions, the list goes on! These little seals found safety in the waters that surround the glacier. Aialik Glacier is receding at 1-2 feet per day, which is really sad if you think about it. But if you are there to see glaciers calving, this one was like ice fireworks! Aialik is 1.5 miles wide and 400 feet tall, so where you see "little chunks" fall off and make a splash, you realize the chunk was the size of your house and that splash was HUGE! It's humbling to be in the presence of something so powerful it can carve through the earth like its soft butter. It was quite an experience to see the cool blue ice that has been a part of this glacier for... how long? Who knows!
